Youngest Cricketer in IPL 2024: Kwena Maphaka

Kwena Maphaka is the youngest player in IPL 2024. He made history as the youngest player to debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) at 17 years and 354 days on 27 March 2024. He played his first IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. In addition to this, he also became the third-youngest overseas player to play in the IPL. MI acquired him for his base price of Rs 50 Lakh to replace the injured Dilshan Madushanka.

Kwena Maphaka's outstanding performance in the U19 World Cup held in South Africa earlier this year earned him a spot in the Lions squad for the CSA T20 Challenge. He claimed 21 wickets in six innings with an impressive average of 9.71 in the U19 World Cup. He continued to impress by bagging seven wickets across four matches in the CSA T20 Challenge.

Kwena's passion for cricket began at the age of three. He joined his school's Under-9 team when he was six and debuted in international cricket at the Under-19 level when he was 15.

Unfortunately, Maphaka had a poor start to his IPL journey, conceding 66 runs from his four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in match number 8 of the IPL, making him the foreign player with the most runs conceded in an IPL innings.

Youngest Player to Debut in IPL: Prayas Ray Barman

On 31 March 2019, a 16-year-old leg spinner from Bengal made history by becoming the youngest player to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team. Bengal's most successful bowler in the 2018 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was Barman. During the IPL auction, Punjab Kings and RCB engaged in a bidding war for him, with RCB ultimately securing his services for INR 1.5 crore after a starting price of 20 lakh was set. Unfortunately, the youngster had a forgettable debut, as he was hit for 56 runs without taking a wicket against Sunrisers Hyderabad. As of now, his debut game remains the only IPL match he has played.
