Who Is the Best Spinner in IPL History?

Yuzvendra Chahal has become the first bowler to complete 200 wickets in the IPL. During match No. 38 of the Indian Premier League 2024 between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians, Chahal achieved this milestone by dismissing MI's Mohammad Nabi. This makes him the first player in the history of the IPL to reach 200 wickets.

Chahal was introduced into the attack in the eighth over of the innings by the RR skipper after MI skipper Hardik Pandya, considered one of the best finishers in IPL, won the toss and elected to bat. Chahal took Nabi's wicket with a leg break, producing a leading edge for a routine catch. This achievement came in Chahal's 152nd innings of the IPL, solidifying his position as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament's history.

The Royals signed Chahal during the mega auction before the IPL 2022. He immediately made an impact, taking 27 wickets from 17 matches that season and guiding the Royals to their first final since the inaugural edition in 2008. He also finished as the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2022 and became the first Purple Cap holder in IPL history, awarded to the bowler with the most wickets in an edition of IPL. Continuing his impressive performance with the Royals, he ended IPL 2023 with 21 wickets from 14 matches and finished fifth in the list of highest wicket-takers for the season.

Chahal has consistently performed in the last four years of IPL, taking 20-plus wickets in three seasons. Chahal is set to have another successful season, having already taken 13 wickets in just eight matches in IPL 2024. The veteran leg spinner has picked up at least one wicket in each of his appearances for the Royals this year. In just his third season with the Rajasthan Royals, Chahal has already taken 61 wickets and is only five wickets away from becoming their top wicket-taker in the IPL. With 65 wickets in 76 matches, Siddharth Trivedi currently tops the list.

1. Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal

Many people believe that Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the best Indian spinners in IPL cricket. He has played a crucial role in helping Royal Challengers win matches. In the 2022 auction, Chahal was bought by Rajasthan Royals, but the change in the team did not affect his performance. He has taken 187 wickets in just 145 matches, with an economy rate of under 7.67.

This makes him a valuable resource in T20 formats. In the 2023 IPL, he was ranked number 5 in the top bowlers’ list, having taken 21 wickets in 14 matches with an economy rate of 8.17, despite bowling in the slog overs. Chahal is one of the most anticipated spinners for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024. He has already taken some crucial wickets and is on his way to becoming the highest wicket-taker in IPL history.

2. Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla is a veteran cricketer with a brilliant IPL career. He has bowled 666 overs in 181 matches, taking more than 179 wickets with his magical leg-spin skills. Chawla is also known for having the longest run without bowling a no-ball. He bowled his first-ever no-ball at his 386th over since his debut.

In 2023, while playing for Mumbai Indians, Piyush took 22 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 8.11, helping his team reach the playoffs. Despite being valued at a minimum bid price of 50 lakh in the IPL 2023 auction, his outstanding performance proved to be worth every penny. MI hopes for a similar contribution from this veteran bowler, who made a comeback in IPL 2024.

3. Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra

Amit Mishra may have achieved less in international cricket than in the IPL, where he is considered a legend. He holds the record for the most hat-tricks (three) in IPL history and has taken 166 wickets, placing him among the top 10 wicket-takers.

In addition, Mishra is known for his exceptional ability to restrict the flow of runs, with an economy rate of just 7.38 in over 650 overs that he has bowled. He is a valuable addition to LSG and is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

4. Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin

Next on our list of the best spin bowlers is Ravi Chandran Ashwin. He is already on the verge of becoming an Indian legend and has a remarkable IPL career. With an economy rate of just 6.94, Ashwin is the skipper's popular choice whenever there is a need to restrict the opposition from scoring quick runs. Besides keeping it tight in the middle overs, Ravi Ashwin is a real partnership-breaker, and his whopping 171 wickets and still counting explains how.

The "Ashwin-In Zone" is always a threat, and if he gets in the mood to take responsibility with the bat, things can get troubling for all the opposing teams. In the recently concluded IPL 2023, he played only 13 matches but scalped 14 wickets at an economy rate of 7.51, which isn't bad in T20s.

5. Sunil Narine

Sunil Narine

Mystery spinners have a separate fan base and for good reasons. One name that pops up instantaneously when we talk about mystery spinners is the Caribbean maestro Sunil Narine. He has been an integral part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for many years, and Narine has found a way to deliver every time his team needed him.

Facing Sunil Narine in his prime is a nightmare for any batsman. He has taken 163 wickets in 162 games at an economy of 7.98, which explains his tale. Although he did not have a great outing in the previous season, he remains a valuable asset to the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming season.

Along with defeating the field with magical deliveries, Narine can score some quick runs. If you have followed IPL for quite some time, you know he has also taken the field as an opening batsman for KKR.

6. Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja

Although spin bowlers are more of a concern here, Ravindra Jadeja holds the number 7 spot, one of the most promising batting all-rounders. His contribution to the team needs no further justification, from mind-blowing catches to blistering batting performances.

Interestingly, Jadeja has been a force in the Chennai Super Kings bowling department for over ten years, being directly involved in more than 152 dismissals. In the 2023 season, he played in 16 matches and took 20 wickets at an economy of 7.56 despite bowling in the powerplay regularly.

MS Dhoni, considered one of the best captains in IPL, is set to retire after the IPL 2024 season. Jadeja may end up captaining the franchise. Ravindra Jadeja is also one of the best fielders in IPL 2024. He has taken 5 catches in 8 matches so far.

7. Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh, popularly known as "The Terminator," is a world-renowned spin bowler with years of expertise. He has taken 150 wickets in 163 matches, demonstrating his significant impact regardless of the team he represented.

The common misconception about spin bowling is that they tend to concede runs. However, Bhajju Pa's economy rate of just around 7, despite bowling over 550 overs, is genuinely commendable, especially in the aggressive nature of the shorter formats.

8. Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan

Rashid Khan is undoubtedly the best spinner in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and dominates the spin action of modern-day cricket. Some consider him the world's best spin bowler. He was included in the Gujarat Titans squad in 2022 for INR 15 crore and has impressive statistics to support his ability.

With an economy rate of 6.67, Rashid Khan is the most economical bowler in IPL history. Moreover, he has taken over 135 wickets in just 109 games, showcasing his proficiency in single-handedly turning the game in his team's favor.

In the recently concluded IPL 2023 season, he took 27 wickets in 17 matches and helped Gujarat Titans reach the final. An interesting fact about Rashid Khan is that besides being an exceptional front-line spin bowler, everyone worldwide enjoys watching him bat.

9. Axar Patel

Axar Patel

There is an upcoming Indian talent who has already gained a lot of fans worldwide. While their international career is still unstable, Axar Patel has succeeded in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with no complaints.

In the 136 IPL matches he has played, Axar has gotten rid of more than 100 batters and has done so at an economy rate of 7.24. This earned him a comeback into the Indian team again. He has already established himself as one of the best spinners in IPL history.

Over the years, his batting has also improved significantly, which adds to his value as a player. It remains to be seen if his performances in 2023 will increase his value and price during the IPL 2024 auction.

10. Pragyan Ojha

Pragyan Ojha

Last on our list of top spinners in IPL is Pragyan Ojha. This Indian left-arm orthodox player made his IPL debut in 2008 and retired from the league in 2015 while playing for Mumbai Indians.

Although his career was relatively short, Ojha left no stone unturned to impress cricket lovers during his game time. In his 80-match IPL career, he took 85 wickets at a cheap economy rate of 7.22.
